A Word from John the Savage

John the Savage's video log from his visit to the World State

Day 1

Subtitles:
Hi everyone. My name is John, and I’m from Malpais. Right now I am staying in the World State. The World State is so different from home. Here, they say everyone “belongs to everyone else”.In other words, there are no couples- no commitment. Everyone is so promiscuous! And another weird thing… people seem to be divided in society by how they dress! Some the mechanics I saw today were all wearing green! The whole place seems so neat… so clean...artificial… Almost boring ! A motto of the world state I learned today is "Community, identity, stability"… But I cannot see where the identity fits in.

Anyway, Today I went to see a “feelie”. The experience was outstanding. Wonderful scents filled the room while a movie played. Then I went to a scent organ concert. A dramatic symphony played while the aroma of flowers floated in the air.

It’s getting late. I’m going to go find an interesting book to read, perhaps something like Shakespeare.

Day 2

Subtitles:
Hello again. I went to see the Central London Hatchery and Conditioning Centre today. I have to say, it really did startle me. They create babies!

First, ovaries from females are surgically removed. Then, the ova is fertilized in artificial receptacles. After fertilization, the embryos move on a conveyor belt in their bottles for 267 days. The embryos are genetically modified depending on their specific roles in the community. For example, embryos destined for the lower castes go through oxygen deprivation and alcohol treatment so they will have a lower intelligence level and smaller stature. It’s really sickening!

I also saw a group of babies conditioned to dislike books and flowers in the nursery. It was preposterous! An alarm sounded as soon as the babies crawled near the objects. Does this community have any time for the pleasure of life? I think not!

Finally, I observed hypnopedia. I observed a group of Beta children undergoing hynopadeic sleep teaching. A recording was whispering to them while they were all sleeping. Betas do not have to work as hard as the smarter Alphas, it said, but they are still smarter than the Gammas, Deltas, and Epsilons.

This is why no one rebels- they are all brainwashed starting from birth!

Day 3

Subtitles:
I can’t believe it! I am starting to strongly dislike this place.

I couldn’t find one decent book to read. All the books I could find were reference novels. Also,

This one girl, Lenina, keeps trying to have sex with me! I just want to get to know her as a friend first. She said we had nothing to worry about because of her contraceptives.

I discovered soma today. It’s some sort of hallucinogen. I feel asleep after taking it, and I was surprised that when I woke up I felt great. Christianity without tears — that's they say what soma is

Today I had a weird experience as well. I visited the Solidarity Service at the Fordson Community Singery. Eleven other people and I sat around a big table, took soma, and ate strawberry ice cream… and the ceremony ended in an orgy! Everyone started chanting:

“Ford, we are twelve; oh, make us one,
Like drops within the Social River;
Oh, make us now together run
As swiftly as thy shining Flivver.
. . .
Orgy-porgy, Ford and fun,
Kiss the girls and make them One.
Boys at one with girls at peace;
Orgy-porgy gives release.”

The whole thing didn’t feel right. I wish I were back in Malpais.

What will the FUTURE bring?
